Communiqué after a one day workshop held in Auchi, Edo state. On Saturday 12th

AKWA IBOM: After careful deliberations from a one day workshop tagged “The
environment and the people” held on 12th June, 2010 in Auchi, Edo State. The
south-south youth leaders’ forum raised serious concern on the slow poisoning of the
waters of this country and the destruction of vegetation and agricultural land by
oil spill, especially the recent oil spillage in Qua Iboe oil field, last year
December, there was a spill in Ibeno shoreline, another occurred in March and now in
June, 2010.it occurred every three months interval in Akwa Ibom by Mobil Nigeria
Limited. The oil spillage has wreak havoc on the surrounding wildlife and habitat,
it threatens the extinction of several communities and has already harmed many land,
sea animals and plant species, birds that feeds by diving, marine life on shore
lines.
The forum is calling on Mobil Nigeria Limited to quickly arrest the situation and respond to the people who reside in Eket and beyond since the consumption of the contaminated water has led to increase risks of cancer, abortion, dermatitis, fungal infection, headaches and nausea. The continuous occurrence of oil spillage threatens the extinction of different ethnic groups that lives in the south-south where the oil exploration is more, we are calling on all well meaning Nigerians, Mobil Nigeria limited and the government to seriously address the problem of oil spillage to avoid further occurrence….
EDO STATE: EROSION DISASTER is a mere term to describe what the forum saw in Utsogun
community, Etsako west local government area in Edo State, The people of Utsogun
community has been rendered homeless and farm less by the effect of this disastrous
erosion, the effect of the erosion has sunk down six major streets in that community
( Zongo str, Inu-umoru str,Ogben str,Union bank lane,Egbeadokhai
str,compressive coll.rd.str.) and many more are yet to be sunk down, those who have
options have left their homes for nearby communities for safety while other’s still
reside by the hole with their families in danger awaiting what becomes of their
fate.
The Forum is calling on the Comrade, Gov.Adams Oshiomhole, The President of the
Federal republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to visit the Utsogun community in
Etsako west local government area Edo State where six streets are already sunk down.
The forum express fear that the Utsogun community is near extinction if positive
urgent steps are not taken and it has to be now….
