Communiqué of South South Youth Leaders Forum in its meeting in calabar
(Federal Government Should Expel Mobil Oil Producing From Nigeria)
Its has come to our notice and that of the general public that the multi national oil firms in this country don’t respect or regard the people of the Niger Delta. Their actions in the past and now has shown and can say all about it.
Barely 5 weeks after the oil spill that contaminated Ibeno shoreline in Akwa Ibom, another spill has been reported at the Qua Iboe oil fields. This spill has affected the surrounding communities and has polluted the land thus impacting on the environment and marine life, putting the livelihood of the communities at stake.
It’s imperative to note that Mobil does not know their social responsibility and they are a company that has double standard. It is a show of shame on the part of our Government for putting grees above the interest of our citizens. Mobil must be held accountable to the same level of high standards as they have in the west.
Mobil should be asked if they will allow the citizens of the United States to be exposed to crude oil which volatile compounds of it are most toxic, hazardous to our health and has benzenes that causes cancer, also has a link to problems varying from respiratory disorder to headaches. The effects are enormous.
When the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico happened, the government of the US and British Petroleum took urgent actions to protect the lives of their citizen and the environment and still was criticized, the situation is different in our country.
These oil companies in the Niger Delta has shown enough disrespect our people, we should ask if the oil that God had blessed us with is now a cause.
There are reports that soldiers were sent to stop the youths that came out to protest, and some were brutalized.
