4TH EMERGENCY GENERAL MEETING OF THE SOUTH- SOUTH YOUTH LEADERS FORUM, HELD IN PORT HARCOURT THE RIVERS STATE CAPITAL
PRESS RELEASE
We wish to congratulate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for his erudite choice of Prof. Attahiru Jega, as the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman.
We also with to congratulate Prof. Jega on his appointment, we are hoping that he will bring the much needed charge in our electoral system.
We therefore call on President Goodluck Jonathan to give the INEC free hand to work, as that it the only way true success can be recorded.
The President is hereby advised to put his ambition behind him and ensure total reform in the INEC, as to ensure adequate and conducive operating environment that is required for the INEC boss to succeed in office.
We are also of the view that financial autonomy is highly imperative if INEC may record any form of success or conduct a credible election.
We consider this to be a major test for President Goodluck Jonathan, as the world is expecting a total non-interference from his part in the activities of INEC. We therefore call upon him to firmly ensure and observe the process of electoral reforms especially as recommended by the Justice Muhammadu Uwais report.
On the other hand Prof. Attahiru Jega must realize the fact that he has enormous task to take Nigeria to the promise land by 2011.
He is expected to return the lost confidence of Nigeria in our electoral process, Prof. Jega, must do his best to meet the expectations of Nigeria and not that of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Nigerians have longed agitated for an electoral umpire with unbiased integrity therefore Prof. Jega cannot afford to dash our hopes at this critical time.
We are indeed satisfied with his pedigree and nomination, however we shall not hesitate to call for his sack if it because obvious that he is reading a script from the Peoples Democratic Party. (PDP), it is our believe that Prof. Jegas first assignment is to reform the INEC therefore our humble opinion is that he creates a new votes register, as well as flush out all the bad eggs in the commission. He must reform the INEC to his standard even as the government is expected to create an enabling working environment for him.
